Obesity and overweight

Body mass index (BMI) is a widely used assessment method for calculating the weight-to-height ratio and defining a patient's weight category. According to this classification, a person is considered overweight if their BMI is between 25 and 29.9, or obese if it is higher than 30.
What consequences can obesity and overweight have?
These conditions can lead to the development of diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure , increase the risk of suffering a stroke or heart attack, cause problems in the hip and knee joints, in addition to affecting the psychosocial component of the person , etc.
What treatment alternatives are there?
It is important to identify the causes of overweight and obesity and to intervene in modifiable factors , such as the type of diet, the relationship with food and physical activity; in the same way, metabolic causes that can affect body weight must be diagnosed and treated. It should be noted that in the treatment of overweight some treatments with medications or restrictive treatment of gastric capacity can be considered. Among the most used alternatives are the intragastric balloon , which consists of reducing the size of the stomach to decrease its capacity, and bariatric surgery in which a bypass of the intestine is performed to decrease the absorption of food.
